Auditions

Hail and well met!  The 4th Annual Mid-South Renaissance Faire is looking for charismatic, engaging and talented cast members with amazing improvisational skills to delight and entertain our patrons!  The majority of the cast positions will be on a volunteer basis, however we do have a few paid cast leadership positions at the bottom of the list below. We will have two workshop/audition cycles in 2018, one in Feb/March and another around June/July.  The March auditions have already been scheduled for March 4th from 11am-4pm and makeup audition session on March 6th from 5pm-8pm.  You can SIGN UP FOR AUDITIONS HERE.    Please read all of the info on this page before you sign up for auditions or apply for leadership positions.  If you are hired for a paid position, you will be considered a temporary, short-term contractor, not an employee.

General Requirements for all roles:

  • Display a positive attitude with patrons, other workers and the leadership team.
  • The ability to be flexible, roll with the punches and change focus or priorities based on the needs of the business
  • Ability to remain at your post or perform your duties in the outdoors in temperatures ranging from 35-95 degrees.
  • Ability to do a lot of walking
  • WORKING DATES/HOURS: Patron dates and hours are October 13, 14, 20, 21, 2018  from 10a-6pm.  Shifts, start/end times, break/lunch times may be different than faire patron hours.  
  • Must attend mandatory Cast Workshops & Meetings:  The workshops and meetings will consist of bio/story development and sharing, theater exercises, Elizabethan dance practice, costume work, craft circle, group break-off sessions (fae, guard, etc).  There will usually be 1 meeting per month and about 2 meetings in the month prior to faire.

Audition Requirements (examples online, if out of town, can email video or skype):

  1. Tell us which cast role you are applying for and have a character and backstory prepared.
  2. Costumes are not required at the audition, but you must provide your own costume for faire.  Please bring a photo or drawing of the costume you plan to wear.
  3. Choose any 2 talents that you would like to perform for us during your audition slot (you may double up on one type).  Each performance needs to only be 45-90 seconds each:
    -Theatrical monologue, poem or story
    -Comedy/joke set
    -Song (vocal)
    -Song (instrumental)
    -Dance
    -Physical talent/skill
    -Other
  4. Short chat with Queen Elizabeth I, in character, to show off improvisation skills and show your character’s personality
  5. Short Q&A session with the Cast Director
  6. Recent head shot or photo for us to keep

VOLUNTEER CAST NEEDED
(minimum age 13, minors must have parent’s verbal and written permission):

Volunteers receive free workshop, tshirt, food vouchers and admission for days not working.

QUEEN’S ATTENDANTS (need 2)
-Reports to Cast Director
Experience/Requirements:
-Knowledge of Elizabethan clothing

-Background in theater a plus
-Organized and detail-oriented
-Able to do a lot of walking
-Able to endure an outdoor environment and possible weather extremes for 10 hour stretches
Position Description:
PRE-FAIRE:

-Must provide or pay for own lower to middle class level costume, which must be approved by Creative Director
-Must attend at least one of the pre-faire workshops
-Must Audition
-Must Attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Must Attend at least 1 promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc.
FAIRE DAYS:
-Responsible for getting the Queen dressed each faire day on time.
-Responsible for helping the Queen with hair, makeup and jewlelry.
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Responsible for making sure the Queen has what she needs throughout the day, whether it be drinks or fan or favors ,etc.
-Responsible for obtaining food and beverage for the Queen throughout the day.

QUEEN’S GUARD (need 6)
-Reports to Captain of the Guard
Experience/Requirements:
-Theater/Performing experience preferred

-Strong improvisation skills needed
-Able to do a lot of walking
-Able to endure an outdoor environment and possible weather extremes for 10 hour stretches
-Able to wear historically accurate clothing for 10 hour stretches
Position Description:

PRE-FAIRE:

-Must provide or pay for own costume, which must be approved by Creative Director
-Must attend at least one of the pre-faire workshops
-Must Audition
-Must Attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Must Attend at least 1 promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc.
FAIRE DAYS:
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Talk to, interact and improvise with the public with an English accent
-Maintain a smile, positive attitude and patience with patrons and children at all times
-Guard the Queen when she is out among the patrons
-Perform tasks as assigned by the Captain of the Guard
-Be familiar with the joust script and be able to improvise with the joust team

NOBILITY (Renaissance lords & ladies- need 8)
-Reports to Cast Director
Experience/Requirements:
-Theater/Performing experience preferred

-Strong improvisation skills needed
-Able to do a lot of walking
-Able to endure an outdoor environment and possible weather extremes for 10 hour stretches
-Able to wear historically accurate clothing for 10 hour stretches
Position Description:

PRE-FAIRE:

-Must have a character with a backstory
-Must provide or pay for own nobility level costume, which must be approved by Creative Director
-Must attend at least one of the pre-faire workshops
-Must Audition
-Must Attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Must Attend at least 1 promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc.
FAIRE DAYS:
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Talk to, interact and improvise with the public with an English accent
-Maintain a smile, positive attitude and patience with patrons and children at all times
-Perform with the Elizabethan Dancing groups
-Be familiar with the joust script and be able to improvise with the joust team
-Assist with the Knighting Ceremonies, Teas, Dog Ruff contests and Costume Contests

SHIREFOLK (villagers, merchants, peasants- need 10)
-Reports to Cast Director
Experience/Requirements:
-Theater/Performing experience preferred

-Strong improvisation skills needed
-Able to do a lot of walking
-Able to endure an outdoor environment and possible weather extremes for 10 hour stretches
Position Description:

PRE-FAIRE:

-Must have a character with a backstory
-Must provide or pay for own costume, which must be approved by Creative Director
-Must attend at least one of the pre-faire workshops
-Must Audition
-Must Attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Must Attend at least 1 promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc.
FAIRE DAYS:
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Strolling the faire grounds, talk to, interact and improvise with the public with an English accent
-Maintain a smile, positive attitude and patience with patrons and children at all times
-If needed, assist with the Knighting Ceremonies, Teas, Dog Ruff contests and Costume Contests

FAERIES (need 6)
-Reports to Faerie Queene
Experience/Requirements:

PRE-FAIRE:

-Must provide or pay for own costume, which must be approved by Creative Director
-Must attend at least one of the pre-faire workshops
-Must Audition
-Must Attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Must Attend at least 1 promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc.
FAIRE DAYS:
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Talk to, interact and improvise with the public with an English accent
-Maintain a smile, positive attitude and patience with patrons and children at all times

PAID CAST POSITIONS/ROLES
(minimum age 18, requires signing up for the audition plus applying for position):

Salary for paid positions will be somewhere between .2% and .5% of ticket sales depending on candidate experience and the difficulty level and time commitment of the position.  All paid leadership candidates that are being considered will be contacted to schedule an in person interview.

QUEEN ELIZABETH I UNDERSTUDY
-Reports to Cast Director
-Paid only for days replacing Queen if needed and small stipend for each promotional event

Experience/Requirements:
-Background in theater or performing arts preferred

-Strong improvisation skills needed
-Able to wear historically accurate corset, dress, underpinnings and accessories for 10 hour stretches
-Must audition privately at interview if being considered for position
Position Description:
PRE-FAIRE DUTIES:

-Must attend pre-audition workshops
-Must attend cast meetings prior to faire
-Available to fill in for the queen at several promo functions throughout the year such as St. Paddy’s Day Parade, readings, etc
FAIRE DAYS DUTIES:
-When not replacing Queen, will be a lady of the court on regular faire days
-On faire days, be fully dressed by 9 am, be present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and be present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Talk to, interact and improvise with the patrons during faire hours with an English accent
-Maintain a smile, positive attitude and patience with patrons and children at all times
-Follow the Queen’s Schedule each faire day
-Required to do an opening monologue each faire day
-Be familiar with joust script and improvise with the joust team during their showtimes
-Knight patrons in the knighting ceremonies
-Judge the costume and dog ruff contests
-Attend at least one Tea Party per faire day

CAST DIRECTOR (audition not required, just apply for position at link below)

-Reports to Creative Director
Experience/Requirements:
-Background in theater or performing arts preferred
-Basic computer skills
-Organized and detail-oriented
Position Description:
PRE-FAIRE DUTIES:
-Find potential volunteer cast members at schools and theaters
-Coordinate with Creative Director and Cast Director on court story lines
-Coordinate with jousters on scripting of joust and improvisation
-Assist with workshops and auditions Feb/March & June/July
-Ensure all cast attend at least one of two cast workshops
-Conduct mandatory Cast Workshops & Meetings:  The workshops and meetings will consist of bio/story development and sharing, theater exercises, lane work exercises, Elizabethan dance practice, costume work, craft circle, group break-off sessions (faeries, guard, etc).
SETUP DAYS DUTIES :
-Help Site Ops with Queen’s Tent area setup, Guard area setup & joust platform tent and decorate with assistance
-Prep dressing room
FAIRE DAYS DUTIES:
-On faire days, ensure all cast are fully dressed by 9 am, are present at the daily cast meeting at 9:15am and present at gate opening at 9:45am
-Talk to, interact and improvise with the patrons during faire hours with an English accent
-Leading gate opening
-Making sure Queen and Court are on schedule all faire day
-Help facilitate knighting ceremonies
-Assist with Elizabethan dances
-Other duties as needed, assigned by creative director
